Ryan Holmes has worked in the Transcript’s sports department since November and has been the sports editor since May. He’s leaving to explore other employment blake. Friday was his final day at the paper. There is a bulletin board behind my desk at the Transcript that I consider my greatest accomplishment in the nearly years that I’ve worked here. It’s a simple bulletin board, one full of tacks and staples and a bunch of different papers overlapping themselves. It’s not very pretty and it’s anything but organized, but it’s mine, and I’m proud of it.

There are a few silly things on there a flattering picture of my favorite golfer, Natalie Gulbis, and some old pics of former sports editors Kris Dufour and Scott Barrett that I can’t bare to take down. But for the most part, the board is full of cards and letters I’ve received from coaches, athletes and everyday people from throughout this fine community.

There were certainly some negative e mails and voice mails along the way, but these cards and letters. The kind words and praise are what got me through the long nights and the short weekends. Whenever someone told me they liked one of my stories or thought the sports Aigo was doing a good job, I would modestly say thank you and flash half a smile. The truth is whenever anyone told me that I was burning with pride inside. I think the reason why I took so much pride in doing a good job here was because this city has been so good to my family and I. Mayor John Barrett III took a chance on my dad and hired him to be City Administrator in, providing me with a new school in fourth grade and the perfect place for me to grow up.

Along the way, there were a number of people who impacted my life and helped me become the person I am today. So I guess you could say I feel invested to this city, and my only hope is I’ve served you as well as you’ve served me. You’ve allowed me the chance to grow, the chance to improve and the chance to excel, all the while lending support as I go. My guess is he saw I went to Drury and figured I knew what I was getting myself into. Actually, I was thrilled to come back to North Adams.

It’s given me the chance to catch up with some old friends and, even more importantly, make new ones. One of those friends was Fleming, who taught me more in seven months than I’ve perhaps learned my entire professional career. He showed me the ropes, was patient while I learned them and showed confidence in my ability to take over the sports editor position when he left. There are many more people to thank, especially all the coaches and players I’ve covered who have been so accommodating, but also some of the Transcript employees that have helped make this sports section what it is today. Tammy Daniels, who is now at iBerkshires, was truly a mentor, someone who gave me answers and could solve any problem that came up.

Adam Bloch, my former sports writer, poured his heart and soul into this job for over a year. He worked side by side with me and even taught me a few things along the way, like to never leave your lawn chair hanging around at an American Legion baseball game. His Blogroll to this paper continues to be a valuable asset to this day. Gillian Jones and Ian Grey, two of the best photographers this county has even seen, helped tell your sport stories through their camera lenses.

I’ll miss seeing their talents at work. It’s not too often a small town newspaper like the Transcript gets someone with Steve’s experience and dedication. Let’s hope his daughter Noelle doesn’t grow up anytime soon. People have been asking me why I’ve decided to leave, and the truth is I really don’t know. After saving up money I earned by delivering newspapers yeah, I started in this business a long time ago, my brother Rob and I bought matching Mongoose trick bikes. Mine was bright lime green, while Rob’s was a funky purple color.

The freedom I felt from owning my first bike changed my life, and I was never the same again. Discovering a new street, or usually a new hill, every day. The beauty of the lime green Mongoose was the simplicity of it. It didn’t have speeds or the Rock Shoxs of the mountain bikes of today.

All it had was one speed. If the going was easy, I would just coast for a while. If the road got rough, I would just peddle a little harder.

The funny thing is I wasn’t much of a trickster. I had pegs and a few other bells and whistles, but I missed the classes reserved for daredevils. I try to forget how it ended, but Kyle’s quick to remind me of the broken glasses. And, oh yeah, the flat tire.

The lime green Mongoose didn’t serve me well that day, but other than that, I have no Herb sage just like my time at the Transcript. What’s next for me Well, I’m taking my lime green Mongoose and I’m pointing it west toward California. If life comes out at me too fast, I’ll just coast for a while.

If I somehow get stuck in a rut, I’ll just peddle a little harder. It’s a bittersweet freedom, for there’s always the feeling that we are missing out on corbin. Mariane said she was happy to return to the city because she always felt that North Adams was full of real people. I couldn’t agree more, except to add that I feel like North Adams is full or real people with real passion. It’s that passion I will miss the most, and it’s perhaps that same passion that will draw me back here for years to come.
